Throughout history, many women have left their mark on art without receiving the recognition they deserve.
At Artelatam, we believe in the importance of making their talent visible and celebrating their impact.
Because art is not only admired—it is also acknowledged. Today, their names and works shine.
As They Said It…
For centuries, women in art have painted, sculpted, and created beyond the limits imposed on them. Their voices, often silenced, now echo through time, inspiring new generations.
Regina José Galindo reminds us that art is a weapon for change. Frida Kahlo teaches us to fly beyond pain. Marta Minujín refuses to be boxed in—she is an artist, period. Georgia O’Keeffe defended women’s artistic independence, stating: “For me, painting is a way to live life more intensely.”
Their words are more than quotes; they are a call to create, resist, and transform.
Breaking Barriers, Building the Future
Despite historical challenges, contemporary female artists continue to redefine the art world. They explore themes of identity, resilience, and justice, using their creativity to challenge norms and inspire change.
According to a UNESCO report, women represent more than 50% of graduates in art and design worldwide, yet only 16% of museum exhibitions are dedicated to them. Additionally, an Artnet study revealed that between 2008 and 2019, only 2% of art auction sales were for works by female artists.
A report from the National Museum of Women in the Arts indicates that less than 13% of the collections in major museums worldwide include works by women. However, recognition is growing: in 2022, MoMA dedicated 40% of its solo exhibitions to women, a significant advancement compared to previous decades.
Despite these figures, artists like Tania Bruguera, with her politically charged performances, and Beatriz Milhazes, with her vibrant compositions, demonstrate that art is a reflection of society and a force for evolution. Yayoi Kusama, one of today’s most influential artists, has shown that perseverance and talent can transcend barriers, becoming one of the most valued creators in the global market.
A Tribute to Their Legacy
On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate those who paved the way and those who continue to shape the future of art. Their creativity is a testament to strength, innovation, and perseverance.
